Clyne Heritage Society

Lectures 2017-18

During the winter months the Society organises evening lectures, which are usually held in the Brora Community Centre at the rear of Brora Primary School, unless otherwise advised. All talks begin at 7.30pm and most are held on a Thursday. Lectures are open to all and there is usually a raffle (donations always welcome) - refreshments and admission are free. Anyone wishing to join the Society will be made particularly welcome.

  • June 15th, 2017 – Gordonbush Estate: Setting the Archives in Context
Dr Annie Tindley (Senior Lecturer in History, University of Newcastle) and Dr Iain Robertson (Reader, University of the Highlands and Islands, Dornoch)
Clyne Heritage Society has recently acquired a massive collection of late 19th to mid-20th Century papers and documents from Gordonbush Estate in Strath Brora, which has been described by historians as ‘unique’, ‘fascinating’ and ‘regionally, possibly even nationally important.’
Following the acquisition, the Society approached the Centre for History in the University of the Highlands & Islands, Dornoch, with a view to setting up a PhD project to research the collection and strong links have now been established with academia, who are very keen to be involved.
In tonight's presentations, Dr Tindley will talk about ‘Gordonbush in Context: Landed Estates in Sutherland, c1890-1945’ and Dr Robertson will follow with his talk, ‘Gordonbush in Context, Part II: Looking for the Sutherland Land Rebels, 1918-1939’.
